IELTS Writing Task 2 Band 9 Tips - How I Got 8.5 in 2026

Published: Sep 14, 2026 | 1400+ Words Strong Guide | By Arsalan Iftakhar

IELTS Writing Task 2 is the reason 90% students from Pakistan and India get stuck at 6 or 6.5 overall. I was also stuck at band 6 for 4 months in 2025. My grammar was okay, my vocabulary was okay, but examiner gave me 6. In March 2026 I changed my complete strategy after analyzing 50 Band 9 samples and talking to an ex-examiner on YouTube. I gave exam again on 20 March 2026 and got 8.5 in Writing Task 2, overall 8 band. Listening 8, Reading 8.5, Writing 8.5, Speaking 7. In this strong detailed guide of 1400+ words I will share exact Band 9 structure, vocabulary, grammar, and 5 mistakes that keep you at Band 6. This is not theory from British Council book, this is real 2026 strategy that worked for me.

First you must understand what examiner checks. Many students think only grammar matters. Wrong. Examiner checks 4 criteria each 25%: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range. If you fail in Task Response, you cannot get more than Band 6 even if grammar is perfect. Task Response means you answer question fully with clear position. I failed because I wrote 2 ideas in one paragraph and no clear position. After fixing that, my band jumped.

My 4 Paragraph Band 9 Structure That Works in 2026

Many academies in Lahore teach 5 paragraphs: Introduction, 3 bodies, conclusion. In 2026 examiners want 4 paragraphs for Band 8+: Introduction 50-60 words, Body Paragraph 1 100-110 words, Body Paragraph 2 100-110 words, Conclusion 30-40 words. Total 280-300 words ideal, not 350. In introduction you must paraphrase question in your own words, do not copy question. Example question: "Some people think technology makes life more complicated. Do you agree or disagree?" Your paraphrase: "It is often argued that technological advancement has made modern life increasingly complex. This essay will argue that although technology brings challenges, its benefits outweigh complexities." Then clear thesis: "This essay will argue that..." This shows Task Response. Body Paragraph 1: Start with topic sentence "Firstly, one major reason why technology complicates life is...". Give ONE idea only per paragraph, not 3 ideas. Explain idea with explanation and then real example from Pakistan. Example: "For instance, in Pakistan, young people spend 6 hours daily on social media, leading to reduced productivity." Examiner loves real examples. Body Paragraph 2: "Secondly, despite complexities, technology offers undeniable advantages...". Give second idea. Conclusion: Summarize both points in 2 lines and restate your position. No new idea in conclusion. This 4 paragraph clear structure gave me 8.5 because examiner can follow easily. Coherence and Cohesion becomes automatic.

Vocabulary for Band 9 - Use Collocations Not Difficult Words

Students think Band 9 needs very difficult words like "ubiquitous, exacerbate, plethora". Wrong and dangerous. If you use difficult word wrongly, examiner gives Band 5 for vocabulary. Band 9 needs natural academic collocations, not difficult words. Collocation means words that go together naturally. I used 8-10 collocations per essay. Examples: "significant increase, major reason, detrimental effect, beneficial impact, allocate resources, contemporary society, it is evident that, pressing issue, of paramount importance, play a crucial role". I made list of 60 collocations for 6 common topics: Education, Technology, Environment, Health, Government, Crime. I memorized only 60 and used same in exam. Example: Instead of "very important", I wrote "crucial" or "of paramount importance". Instead of "big problem", I wrote "pressing issue". Instead of "government should help", I wrote "government should allocate resources to". This shows Lexical Resource Band 9. Also avoid memorized sentences like "In this modern era of technology and globalization..." Examiner knows it is memorized and gives Band 5. Use natural simple academic style.

Grammar for Band 9 - Mix All Sentence Types

For Grammatical Range Band 9 you need mix of sentence structures: Simple, Compound, Complex, Conditional, Relative clause, Passive. I used formula: 70% simple and compound for clarity, 30% complex for range. Per essay I used: 2 conditional sentences: "If government invests in online education, rural students would benefit immensely." 2 relative clauses: "Students who live in remote areas of Pakistan often lack access to quality teachers." 1 passive: "It is widely believed that technology has transformed education." 1 complex with although: "Although technology has drawbacks, its advantages cannot be denied." And rest simple clear sentences. Before I made mistake of using only complex long sentences and essay became confusing and full of grammar mistakes. Now I mix and keep error-free. I practiced 20 essays and checked each with free ChatGPT prompt: "Check my IELTS essay for grammar errors and give band score for each criteria". It helped me find small mistakes like "childrens" instead of "children", "informations" instead of "information" which are uncountable. Also article a/an/the mistakes.

5 Mistakes That Keep You at Band 6 and How to Fix

Mistake 1: Writing less than 250 words. If you write 220 words, Task Response Band 5 directly. Count words. Write 280-290 ideal. Mistake 2: No clear position. If question asks "Do you agree or disagree?" you must say clearly I agree or I disagree in introduction and keep same position whole essay. Do not say "both sides have benefits" if question asks your opinion. That is Band 5 Task Response. Mistake 3: Too many ideas in one paragraph. One paragraph = one idea + explanation + example. If you write 3 ideas in one paragraph, Coherence Band 6. Mistake 4: No linking words or too many. Use 6-7 linking words: Firstly, Secondly, Moreover, Furthermore, However, Therefore, In conclusion. Do not use 15 linking words, it looks forced. Mistake 5: Copying question words. You must paraphrase. If question says "Some people think technology is bad", you write "Some individuals argue that technological advancement has adverse effects". That shows vocabulary Band 8.

Final 15 day plan that gave me 8.5: Day 1-3 learn 4 paragraph structure and write 1 essay daily on any topic. Day 4-7 learn 60 collocations and rewrite same 3 essays using them. Day 8-12 write 5 new essays on common topics: Education, Technology, Environment, Health, Government. Get them checked from teacher or ChatGPT. Note your repeated mistakes.
